Betweenness centrality profiles in trees

چکیده
Betweenness centrality of a vertex in a graph measures the fraction of shortest paths going through the vertex. This is a basic notion for determining the importance of a vertex in a network. The kbetweenness centrality of a vertex is defined similarly, but only considers shortest paths of length at most k. The sequence of k-betweenness centralities for all possible values of k forms the betweenness centrality profile of a vertex. We study properties of betweenness centrality profiles in trees. We show that for scale-free random trees, for fixed k, the expectation of k-betweenness centrality strictly decreases as the index of the vertex increases. We also analyze worst-case properties of profiles in terms of the distance of profiles from being monotone, and the number of times pairs of profiles can cross. This is related to whether k-betweenness centrality, for small values of k, may be used instead of having to consider all shortest paths. Bounds are given that are optimal in order of magnitude. We also present some experimental results for scale-free random trees.

On the distribution of betweenness centrality in random trees
Betweenness centrality is a quantity that is frequently used to measure how ‘central’ a vertex v is. It is defined as the sum, over pairs of vertices other than v, of the proportions of shortest paths that pass through v. In this paper, we study the distribution of the betweenness centrality in random trees and related, subcritical graph families. Specifically, we prove that the betweenness cen...

Betweenness centrality is a distance-based invariant of graphs. In this paper, we use lexicographic product to compute betweenness centrality of some important classes of graphs. Finally, we pose some open problems related to this topic.

We investigate the properties of the spanning trees of various real-world and model networks. The spanning tree representing the communication kernel of the original network is determined by maximizing the total weight of the edges, whose weights are given by the edge betweenness centralities. We find that a scale-free tree and shortcuts organize a complex network. Especially, in ubiquitous sca...
متن کاملBetweenness centrality in large complex networks
We analyze the betweenness centrality (BC) of nodes in large complex networks. In general, the BC is increasing with connectivity as a power law with an exponent η. We find that for trees or networks with a small loop density η = 2 while a larger density of loops leads to η < 2. For scale-free networks characterized by an exponent γ which describes the connectivity distribution decay, the BC is...
متن کاملFast exact and approximate computation of betweenness centrality in social networks
Social networks have demonstrated in the last few years to be a powerful and flexible concept useful to represent and analyze data emerging from social interactions and social activities. The study of these networks can thus provide a deeper understanding of many emergent global phenomena. The amount of data available in the form of social networks is growing by the day. This poses many computa...
